GENERAL SURGERY – Hermanias
HERNIAS
General information
A hernia is a weak point in the abdominal wall. The most common types of hernias include hernia of the groin (inguinal hernia), abdominal hernia (ventral hernia), hernias around the belly button (umbilical hernia) or post-surgical hernias (incisional hernia).
Patients complain of pain or swelling (particularly that which increases with coughing, straining or sneezing) in the groin, abdomen, belly area or in a place that has been operated on. Swelling is usually first noticed by patients, who can push back the swelling with their hands.
Unfortunately, the only treatment for hernias is surgery.
Hernias can be repaired with a traditional surgical method (open hernia repair) or with a laparoscope (laparoscopic hernia repair). Both methods implement Lichtenstein’s tension free hernia repair with prosthetic mesh. There are no major differences between the two methods, both of which take 60-120 minutes. The surgeon and the patient collaborate to choose the method to be used. The relapse rate for hernia repair using prosthetic mesh is currently less than 1%.
